Sustainability Data Engineer

You will find R&D departments in Belgium, China and offices and production facilities in Belgium (Dendermonde), Germany, Hungary, Malaysia, China, USA and Mexico. For our Sustainability Department in Dendermonde, we are looking for a Sustainability Data Engineer.

What will you do for us as a Sustainability Data Engineer?

The Sustainability Data Engineer will be responsible for collecting, analyzing, quality assessing, maintaining data inputs and visualizing reporting on sustainability (ESG) data to help drive our company’s environmental & social goals. This will include data covering product bill of materials, supplier components, chemical composition if needed, corporate GHG input data, CSRD inputs and future inputs. This role will involve working closely with various departments to ensure accurate data collection and to support the development and implementation of sustainability initiatives.

Key areas of accountability:

Data Collection and Management:

  • Collect, manage and streamline data related to energy usage, water consumption, waste generation, greenhouse gas emissions, social & taxonomy data and other sustainability metrics or product specific/supplier specific data (from drawings, databases,…)
  • Develop and maintain databases and systems for tracking and reporting sustainability data.

Data & Risk Analysis:

  • Analyze sustainability data to identify trends, patterns, and insights.
  • Assist in improving accuracy of Life cycle assessments and or Product carbon footprints.
  • Provide data-driven recommendations to improve environmental performance.
  • Help with setting up ESG risk assessment (based on public recognized information sites/tools/GIS) within supply chain management and corporate IRO management.
  • Maintaining, optimize the related data to assure data quality and auditability.

Reporting:

  • Prepare and deliver regular reports on sustainability performance to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure data availability with relevant reporting standards and frameworks such as, CDP, CSRD, CSDDD, Taxonomy & CBAM. You will work together with the Sustainability Generalist and Sustainability Officer on these topics.
  • Contribute to the preparation of sustainability reports and other public disclosures.

Collaboration and Support:

  • Work closely with departments such as Operations, Facilities, Supply Chain, Material engineering, Finance & IT to gather data and support sustainability initiatives.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of sustainability strategies and action plans.

Research and Development:

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in sustainability and environmental data analysis.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and improvement in sustainability data management and reporting.
  • Support & train internal (R&D, Procurement, finance, Sales, Service) and external stakeholders (customers, suppliers, OEM) about data gathering and data management workflows

What will you bring to PSS?

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in: Environmental science, Sustainability, Data Science, Statistics or a related field. A master’s degree is a plus.

Experience:

  • 2-3 years of experience in (sustainability) data analytics or a related field.
  • Experience with sustainability reporting frameworks and standards is a plus.

Technical Skills:

Knowledge of PowerBI, Pivot tables, Excel capabilities and data visualization.

Familiarity/Adaptability with environmental management systems and sustainability software.

Capable of performing data transformation and data cleaning to increase data quality and be able to troubleshoot datapoints by tracing back data sources and transformations.

  1. Sufficient understanding of relational database principles and conceptual understanding of operational data stores, data warehouse and data lakes. Experience in data modelling is considered a plus.
  2. Foundational understanding of SQL statements and Data Analysis Expressions (DAX).

Soft Skills:

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Professional proficient written and verbal communication skills (English).
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage simultaneous short- and long-term projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

Bonus Qualifications:

Professional certification in sustainability (e.g., LEED, ISSP).

Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis.

Knowledge of regulatory requirements and standards related to environmental sustainability.
